Essay Signs of Life in the USA - 841 Words
Calley Hagen Matt Montoya English 101 14 October 2014 A Response to Stephen Garrettââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Why We Love TVââ¬â¢s Anti-heroesâ⬠In the reading, ââ¬Å"Why We Love TVââ¬â¢s Anti-heroesâ⬠by Stephen Garrett, he points out that anti-heroes are becoming more popular than the traditional hero. Garrett states, ââ¬Å"the word hero is abused in the news, the sports reports, and even in conversationâ⬠(318). For example tabloids recognize someone who battles a drug addiction and overcomes it or a substitute kicker for the football game kick the winning field goal (318). You see he argues that traditional heroes are ââ¬Å"boringâ⬠and that there are no longer any more real heroes (318-321). Anti-heroes are characters or people who are just evil but still get the viewers to likeâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In their eyes she did all this because she loved him and she just so happened to break about every rule in the hospital and ruin the chances of someone else getting the heart that they deserved. As you can se e she is not a cold case murder like some of the other anti-heroes that you know of but she still does things her own way to get what she wants. In a way she is doing the right thing by trying to help out the one she loves but she is risking her whole career and ends up killing the man. When I think of anti-heroes I think more of Stephen form The Vampire Diaries, he is a vampire who is a couple hundred years old and he is living in our present time. He falls in love with Alena a normal small town girl, he has all the right intentions to keep her human and protect her from the other vampires who are out to get her. However in the process she ends up getting turned into a vampire and getting her heart broken by Stephen. The roles played in Greyââ¬â¢s Anatomy are nothing like that however, they fit the anti-hero role by being liars and being deceiving. While talking about anti-heroes and why they are taking over TV made me agree with Garrett, traditional heroes do get boring because in the end they always win. I do believe that there are still heroes in our modern world, we have soldiers fighting for the freedom of our country, no they donââ¬â¢t have super powers but they are still doing the right thing to protect the people that they love. With anti-heroes it is veryShow MoreRelatedWas the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki the only way to put an end to World War 2?716 Words à |à 3 Pagesto why the USA would go through such extremesââ¬â¢ in order to put an end to WWII and how the USA could be so distasteful and have such a disregard for human life. Of Mice and Men Report Essay Example For Students
Of Mice and Men Report Essay Setting: Of Mice and Men takes place sometime during the Depression of the 1930 s. The book starts off next to a stream near the Salinas River, a few miles South of Soledad. Then the setting moves to an isolated, lonely looking ranch, where the main part of the story takes place. Then at the end of the book, the setting comes back to where it started. Characters: George ââ¬â the main character of the book. He is a caring, understanding, and dreams of owning his own piece of land. Lennie ââ¬â the loyal friend of George. He has a childââ¬â¢s mind and a giantââ¬â¢s body. It is these contrasting qualities that cause him problems. Old Candy ââ¬â one of the lonely ranch workers. He is a cripple, working as a ââ¬ËSwamperââ¬â¢. Crooks ââ¬â named for his crooked body; he is a proud Negro man that works on the Ranch. He is neat and has a mind of his own. He is a lonely character, who is discriminated against, due to his race. Slim ââ¬â a ranch worker with leadership qualities. He commands respect from all on the ranch. Curley ââ¬â the bossââ¬â¢s son who is a light weight boxer. He picks fights with everybody on the ranch. Curleyââ¬â¢s wife ââ¬â the only woman on the ranch. She is very flirtatious. Plot: George and Lennie live during the depression and they wander from town to town doing jobs but Lennie always gets them in trouble. For example, this girl thought Lennie was trying to rape her when he was really just feeling her dress since he liked the material. Lennie dreams of owning a rabbit farm and is mentally retarded. Sometimes he ends up killing animals because he is so strong. When he accidentally kills Curleyââ¬â¢s wife problems arise and George has to kill him so they wonââ¬â¢t lock him up. Theme: I think that this novelââ¬â¢s theme was loneliness. All of the workers were lonely in a sense, although they had people around them to talk to. They couldnââ¬â¢t let out any of their feelings because another worker could use it against them. The last line of the bookââ¬â ââ¬Å"What the hell do you suppose is eatinââ¬â¢ them two guys?â⬠ââ¬âis said by Carlson. Now, why would any person with any sense of sympathy or knowledge of others wonder that? The man just killed his best friend but Carlson didnââ¬â¢t seem to understand because he never had had a good friend, not one that he would feel bad for at least. These men never knew what it is like to share. They have always had to be strong. This to me shows that they were the best examples of loneliness. Conflict: George is the kind-hearted ranch hand who is concerned about his friend Lennie and watches out for him. Because he has a giantââ¬â¢s body and a childââ¬â¢s mind, Lennie accidentally kills Curleyââ¬â¢s wife; at the same time he kills the dream of owning a farm that has kept George and Lennie positive about the future. The climax occurs when Lennie accidentally kills Curleyââ¬â¢s wife. George knows that he can no longer save Lennie, for Curley will want revenge. Of Mice and Men ends in tragedy. George feels compelled to mercifully kill his friend and companion, Lennie, in order to save him from a brutal death. Evaluation: The book was sad, but it truly is a great. It describes so many things about life. Some examples are: how dreams help give meaning to life, the importance of friendship, and how life unabashedly kicks you repeatedly down. If you are looking for a book that depicts a rosy existence, this is not the one.

The Virtue of Laziness Wu-Wei in Life and Politics Essay Example
The Virtue of Laziness: Wu-Wei in Life and Politics Paper The Taoist concept of wu-wei has been in existence for more than three thousand years. In martial arts, painting, craft making or any other form of creative endeavor, this state was eagerly sought by many but attained by few. Over the millennia, the idea would pass beyond the borders of Taoism and the Orient to the West. While the terminology might have changed over time and place, the principle is the same. Wu-wei is typically translated as ââ¬Å"non-actionâ⬠; other times it is taken to describe what it means to ââ¬Å"go with the flow. â⬠In time, it had come to mean many things to different people. According to the I-Kuan Tao tradition, wu-wei means ââ¬Å"action without purposeâ⬠, a state of genuine selflessness where a person moves in the spirit of compassion without expectation of personal benefit. To martial arts masters, the spirit of wu-wei is found in spontaneous action or effortless flow (Lin). Five hundred years after Lao-tzu had written his treatise, Bodhidharma brought the message of the Buddha to the Chinese people and the new thought began to fuse with traditional Taoist beliefs (Chââ¬â¢an). Buddhist philosophy takes a negative view toward the world; the elimination of desire, freeing oneself from life. Not surprisingly, they had adopted the negative definition of wu-wei that will now be known as ââ¬Å"the virtue of laziness. â⬠In an address to his congregation, Chââ¬â¢an Master Hu Shi said, ââ¬Å"Seekers of the Way, no effort is necessary. All one has to do is to do nothing, except to move his bowels, urinate, put on his clothing, eat his meals, and lie down if he is tired. An ancient person said, ââ¬ËOne who makes effort externally is surely a fool. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Chan, 446). With the exception of putting on clothing, that description resembles the life of a domestic cat. He was perfectly serious. However, outside of the Eastern schools the state of effortless flow was historically an accidental blessingââ¬âa visit from a museââ¬ânot a carefully cultivated skill, as Lao-tzu intimates in the Tao Te Ching. Modern students of Taoism, particularly many Western students raised on the uniquely Anglo-American Protestant work ethic, would probably agree with Master Huââ¬â¢s vision of wu-wei. Nonetheless, they would interpret it differently. Rather than looking for the wisdom in such an ââ¬Å"alternative lifestyleâ⬠, they would maintain that any kind of non-action was tantamount to laziness. No matter which school of Taoist thought one examines, wu-wei is defined as the absence of striving; of not doing anything that does not need to be done. This essay will attempt to serve as a brief history of wu-wei, in politics, life, and nature. Wu-Wei Through the Ages The Tao Te Ching, one of the greatest classics of the ancients, describes the philosophy of wu-wei at great length. The methods are simple but difficult to implement. When people are conditioned to strain and struggle against their innate nature, reaching a state of harmonic, skillful being is extremely difficult. Lao-tzu wanted to teach people to return to the way they were naturally; working cooperatively with one another and the world at large. Emphasizing gentleness, persistence, non-interference, peacefulness, and courage, Lao-tzu teaches the importance of achieving harmony with the way things are rather than fighting against the current, forcing people and nature into an incongruent state. Alluding to the hands off approach of the ideal ruler, the relative weakness of water, and other naturalistic examples of non-interference, he overturns the prevailing norms that make enduring great struggle the height of virtue, ââ¬Å"The gentlest thing in the world overcomes the hardest thing in the world. That which has no substance enters where there is no space. This shows the value of non-action. Teaching without words, performing without actions: that is the Masterââ¬â¢s Wayâ⬠(Lao-tzu, 43). Like his mentor, Zhuangzi (more famously Chang-tzu) also emphasizes the importance of wu-wei in his work. While Lao-tzu uses somewhat abstract poetic descriptions of water, light, and shadow, Zhuangzi prefers to share anecdotes of normal people in normal careers that display the highest degree of excellence in whichever endeavor they decide to undertake. Such Average Joes included craftsmen, athletes, woodcarvers, and even butchers. One of the most striking examples of wu-wei is Ding the Butcher. He possessed one knife for nineteen years because he perfected his craft in such a slow and deliberate manner, practicing no mistakes in the learning period. Eventually, the practice segued into mastery and watching him at work was a spectacle of effortless grace, bloody as his profession was. The butcher quite eloquently describes his career of non-action, ââ¬Å"Perception and understanding have come to a stop and spirit moves where it wants. I go along with the natural makeup, strike in the big hollows, guide the knife through the big openings, and follow things as they are. So I never touch the smallest ligament or tendon, much less a main joint. There are spaces between the joints, and the blade of the knife has really no thicknessâ⬠¦. [I] move the knife with the greatest subtlety, untilââ¬âflop! The whole thing comes apart like a clod of earth crumbling to the ground(Littlejohn).
